NRI Seat Matrix in NEET PG Medical Counselling
The seat matrix for the NRI quota is one of the most important tools for candidates participating in NEET PG counselling for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses. Published officially by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), the seat matrix provides a transparent, round-wise snapshot of college-wise and branch-wise NRI seat availability. It is revised at every stage of counselling to reflect real-time changes in seat status.
How the NRI Seat Matrix Is Structured
The NRI quota is primarily applicable to deemed universities (where MCC conducts 100% counselling) and select private medical colleges through either central or state counselling. Most government medical colleges have no NRI quota or extremely limited NRI seats.
- NRI quota generally accounts for 5% to 15% of total PG seats per college/branch
- In deemed universities, NRI allocation is commonly close to 15%
- NRI seats are separate from management quota seats
- Exact seat numbers vary by college, specialty, and NMC approval status
Dynamic Nature of NRI Seat Matrix
The MCC updates the NRI seat matrix before every counselling round (Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Mop-up, and Stray Vacancy). This dynamic revision is crucial because NRI seat availability can increase significantly in later rounds.
- New PG seats approved by NMC are added to the matrix
- Seats vacated due to resignations or non-reporting reappear
- Upgradations across rounds create fresh NRI vacancies
- Category conversions (Indian → NRI) alter seat distribution
As a result, Round 3 and subsequent rounds often provide the maximum number of NRI seat opportunities, including in high-demand clinical branches.
Branch-wise Availability Under NRI Quota
NRI seats are available across both clinical and non-clinical specialties, though availability varies significantly by round. Premium branches usually have limited seats initially, but availability improves in later stages due to seat movement.
- Clinical branches: MD Radiology, MD Dermatology, MD General Medicine, MD Paediatrics, MS Orthopaedics
- Para-clinical & non-clinical branches: MD Pathology, MD Microbiology, MD Community Medicine, MD Anatomy
- Later rounds often show sharper cut-off drops in non-clinical branches
Where to Access the Official NRI Seat Matrix
The official MCC website (www.mcc.nic.in) is the only reliable source for the NRI seat matrix. MCC releases detailed PDFs before each counselling round, listing college name, branch, total seats, NRI quota seats, and seat status.
- Seat matrix PDFs are published round-wise under PG counselling notices
- Eligible candidates can view updated matrices during choice filling
- After NRI conversion approval, only NRI-eligible seats are shown
- Downloading the latest PDF is essential before final choice locking.
Important Note
- NRI conversion is subject to strict verification by MCC
- Fake or incomplete documents may lead to cancellation and blacklisting
- Once converted, candidates cannot revert to General category
- NRI seats are limited and highly competitive in clinical branches
- Always rely on official MCC notices and avoid third-party agents
