AIIMS Madurai is a premier public medical institute and Institute of National Importance located in Thoppur (near Madurai), Tamil Nadu, India. Established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) Phase-V, with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019 and official gazette notification on July 3, 2020, it aims to provide high-quality medical education, research, and tertiary healthcare to southern Tamil Nadu and beyond. The institute currently offers undergraduate programs including MBBS (50 seats) and is functioning from a temporary campus at Government Ramanathapuram Medical College, Ramanathapuram, while the permanent campus is under construction (Phase-I targeted for completion by January 2026, with student shifting planned around Pongal 2026 and limited OPD services from February 2026). Postgraduate and other programs will follow in phased rollout.

The sprawling permanent campus spans approximately 220-222 acres, featuring modern, sustainable infrastructure (aiming for IGBC Gold rating with solar power and environmental features). It will include academic blocks with smart lecture halls, demonstration rooms, departmental laboratories, skill simulation labs, a central library with print and digital resources, separate hostels for boys and girls (furnished with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, mess, common rooms, and security), residential quarters for faculty and staff, gymnasium, indoor/outdoor sports facilities (grounds and courts), cafeteria, a 750-seater auditorium, green spaces (including Miyawaki forest), helipad, large parking areas, and essential service buildings. The campus layout emphasizes holistic zones (academic, hospital, hostel, residential, and sports) to support learning, extracurricular activities, and student well-being in a ragging-free environment.

About Hospital

The AIIMS Madurai Hospital is a state-of-the-art tertiary care teaching facility integrated with the institute, designed to provide advanced multispecialty and super-specialty healthcare while serving as a clinical training center. Sanctioned as a 900-bedded hospital (including a dedicated 150-bed infectious diseases block, with core capacity around 750 beds plus expansions like 30-bed AYUSH block), it is under phased construction (Phase-I focusing on key facilities like OPD and initial beds, with full completion targeted by 2027 and partial operations starting early 2026).

The hospital will offer 24x7 emergency and trauma care (with dedicated units), OPD services (limited start from February 2026, with high expected daily footfall of around 1500 patients), IPD admissions, specialized clinics across 15-20 super-specialties (including cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, surgery, and more), advanced diagnostics (radiology, laboratories), modular operation theatres, surgeries, telemedicine, and affordable care under government schemes like AB-PMJAY.
