The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) 2026 result has been officially declared by NBEMS, bringing relief and happiness to thousands of Indian students who completed their MBBS from abroad.
Clearing FMGE is a major milestone, but it is not the final step to start medical practice in India. After passing FMGE, candidates must follow a structured legal and regulatory process involving the National Medical Commission (NMC) and State Medical Councils (SMCs).
This detailed guide explains everything you need to do after passing FMGE 2026, step by step.
What Is FMGE? (Quick Overview)
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a screening test conducted by NBEMS for Indian citizens and OCI candidates who obtained their primary medical qualification (MBBS) from outside India.
-
Conducted: Twice a year
-
Passing marks: 50% (150 out of 300)
-
Purpose: To make foreign medical graduates eligible for medical registration in India
If you have passed FMGE 2026, it means:
✔ You are now eligible to apply for medical registration
✔ You can proceed with NMC verification & certification
✔ You can apply for internship in India (if required)
❌ You cannot start medical practice immediately
❌ FMGE pass alone does not give permanent registration
Complete Process After Passing FMGE 2026 (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Download FMGE 2026 Result & Scorecard
After the declaration of the FMGE 2026 result, the very first step for all qualified candidates is to secure their result-related documents, as these will be required at every subsequent stage of the process.
A. FMGE 2026 Result PDF (Immediate Availability)
-
NBEMS initially publishes the FMGE result in the form of a PDF list of roll numbers.
-
This PDF confirms whether a candidate has qualified or not qualified the examination.
-
Candidates must download and safely store this result PDF for future reference.
● The result PDF acts as the first official proof of qualification, but it does not show individual marks.
B. FMGE 2026 Individual Scorecard (Uploaded After a Few Days)
-
The individual FMGE scorecard is not uploaded immediately on the day of result declaration.
-
NBEMS usually uploads the individual scorecards on the candidate login portal after a few days.
-
Candidates will be able to log in using their Application ID and Password on the NBEMS website to download the scorecard.
The FMGE scorecard contains:
-
☑ Candidate’s name and roll number
-
☑ Total marks obtained (out of 300)
-
☑ Pass / Fail status
-
☑ Examination details
Important :
You must regularly check the NBEMS portal after the result declaration, as the scorecard upload is done in phases and without individual email alerts in many cases.
Step 2: Apply for FMGE Passing Certificate (Issued by NMC)
After clearing FMGE 2026, the most important and compulsory step is to obtain the FMGE Passing Certificate. This certificate serves as the official legal confirmation that a candidate has successfully passed the FMGE examination and is eligible to proceed further in the medical registration process in India.
The FMGE Passing Certificate is issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi). While NBEMS conducts the FMGE exam and declares the result, only NMC has the authority to issue this certificate. Without it, no State Medical Council will accept a registration application.
The issuance of the FMGE Passing Certificate is done only after physical document verification. NMC releases an official notice after the FMGE result, mentioning the verification schedule and venue. Candidates are required to appear in person with their original documents for verification.
Once all documents are successfully verified by NMC, the FMGE Passing Certificate is issued. This certificate is mandatory for applying for State Medical Council registration, internship allotment, and eventually permanent medical registration in India.
Important: FMGE result or scorecard alone is not sufficient. The FMGE Passing Certificate issued by NMC is compulsory at every further stage.
Documents Required for FMGE Passing Certificate (NMC Verification)
| Document Name | Remarks |
| FMGE Admit Card | Mandatory for verification |
| FMGE Result PDF | Proof of qualification |
| FMGE Individual Scorecard | Download from NBEMS portal |
| Passport | With entry–exit stamps |
| MBBS Degree Certificate | Original required |
| MBBS Mark Sheets | All years/semesters |
| Eligibility Certificate (NMC/MCI) | Issued before admission abroad |
| Internship Certificate (if applicable) | If completed outside India |
| Date of Birth Proof | Class 10 certificate |
| Aadhaar Card / Govt ID | For identity verification |
Step 3: Apply for State Medical Council (SMC) Registration
After obtaining the FMGE Passing Certificate from NMC, the next mandatory step is to apply for State Medical Council (SMC) registration. This registration is required to formally enter the Indian medical system and to move ahead with internship and future permanent registration.
Candidates can apply to any one State Medical Council. Most FMGE-passed candidates choose either their home state or the state where they intend to complete their internship. Each State Medical Council functions independently and follows its own rules, timelines, and application process.
It is important to understand that there is no central or all-India counselling system for State Medical Council registration or FMGE internship. The entire process is handled state-wise, and procedures may differ significantly from one state to another. Candidates must apply directly to the concerned State Medical Council or follow state-specific notifications.
At this stage, candidates are usually granted Provisional Registration, which allows them to join the Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI). Permanent Registration is issued only after successful completion of the internship.
Important: A candidate can be registered with only one State Medical Council at a time. Therefore, selecting the right state is crucial, as it impacts internship availability, waiting period, and future practice options.
Step 4: Compulsory Internship in India (CRMI)
After FMGE, internship in India is compulsory.
A 12-month Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) must be completed in an NMC-recognized medical college or hospital in India before permanent registration is granted.
Even if a candidate has completed internship abroad, it is not automatically accepted. The final decision lies with NMC. If NMC does not approve the foreign internship, the candidate must complete the full 12-month internship in India.
Without completing CRMI in India, permanent registration and independent medical practice are not allowed.
Internship Rotation Structure (1 Year)
| Department / Posting | Duration | Key Exposure |
| General Medicine | 2 Months | Ward duties, OPD, case management |
| General Surgery | 2 Months | Pre & post-operative care, OT exposure |
| Obstetrics & Gynaecology | 2 Months | Labour room, antenatal care, gynae OPD |
| Pediatrics | 1 Month | Child OPD, neonatal & ward care |
| Orthopaedics | 1 Month | Fracture care, OPD, plastering |
| Community Medicine | 2 Months | PHC/CHC posting, public health work |

| ENT | 15 Days | OPD, minor procedures |
| Ophthalmology | 15 Days | Eye OPD, basic examinations |

Step 5: Complete Internship & Apply for Permanent Registration
After successfully completing the internship, candidates receive an Internship Completion Certificate. Using this certificate, they can apply to the State Medical Council for Permanent Registration.
Once permanent registration is granted, the candidate is legally eligible to practice medicine in India.
