NEET 2026 Opportunity Increases: MBBS Seats 1.28 Lakh, PG Seats 85,000+
NEET UG 2026: 818 Medical Colleges, 1,28,976 MBBS Seats – Biggest Expansion in Indian Medical Education
India’s medical education sector has witnessed a massive expansion. Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed the Lok Sabha that the country now has 818 medical colleges recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). This is a huge increase from 596 colleges in 2021-22.
Along with colleges, the number of seats has also grown rapidly. MBBS seats have increased to 1,28,976, while postgraduate (PG) seats have reached 85,020. This is one of the fastest medical infrastructure expansions in India’s history and directly impacts NEET UG 2026 aspirants.
Growth of Medical Colleges and Seats (Official Data)
| Academic Year | Medical Colleges | MBBS Seats | PG Seats |
| 2021-22 | 596 | 88,120 | 55,595 |
| 2026 | 818 | 1,28,976 | 85,020 |
The increase clearly shows how aggressively India is expanding healthcare education to address the shortage of doctors, especially in rural and underserved areas.

For NEET 2026 Aspirants
For students preparing for NEET UG 2026, this is very positive news. More MBBS seats mean the overall competition ratio is slowly improving compared to previous years. Many states that earlier had limited government seats now have newly established medical colleges.
However, students should not misunderstand this expansion as “easy admission.” The top government colleges in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh will still have very high cutoffs. The real benefit will be seen in newly opened government colleges and private/deemed institutions where cutoffs are comparatively lower.
Students who are willing to study in smaller cities or new colleges will have significantly better chances than before.
MBBS Seats vs PG Seats
The number of PG seats has also increased to 85,020, which is important for long-term career planning. After MBBS, most students aim for specialization through NEET PG or INI-CET. More PG seats improve future opportunities.
| Course Level | Total Seats (2026) |
| MBBS (Undergraduate) | 1,28,976 |
| Postgraduate (MD/MS/DNB) | 85,020 |
Despite the increase, a gap still exists between MBBS and PG seats. This means many graduates will still compete for specialization seats in the future. Therefore, NEET UG admission is only the first step — future performance during MBBS remains extremely important.
Yoga Added to MBBS Curriculum (CBME 2024)
Another important update is the inclusion of Yoga in the medical curriculum. As per the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines 2024 and Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) Regulations 2023, every medical college must establish a Department of Yoga.
Medical colleges are encouraged to involve students, doctors and staff in Yoga activities and awareness programs. This indicates a shift toward holistic healthcare where modern medicine and preventive wellness approaches are combined.
Impact on NEET UG 2026 Cutoffs
Because of the increased seat matrix, cutoffs may become slightly relaxed in later counselling rounds. However, top colleges will remain highly competitive.
- 1. 620+ marks → Good government medical colleges
- 2. 580–610 marks → Possible government seats in some states
- 3. 550–600 marks → Strong chance in private/deemed colleges
- 4. Below 550 → Mostly private colleges, BDS, or AYUSH options
Reserved category students (OBC, SC, ST, EWS) will benefit the most because new colleges also include reservation quota seats.
- India now has the highest number of medical colleges in its history. More MBBS seats mean more opportunities but not automatic admission. Newly opened colleges offer better chances than top government institutions.
- PG seats are also increasing, improving future specialization prospects. Preparation quality still matters more than just qualifying NEET.
