CBSE Introduces On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 Board Exams 2026: Answer Sheets to Be Checked Digitally

Last updated: February 11, 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major reform in the evaluation process for Class 12 Board Exams 2026 by introducing On-Screen Marking (OSM). Under the new system, answer sheets will be scanned and assessed digitally by teachers through a secure online platform instead of being checked physically at evaluation centres, a move aimed at faster, more accurate and transparent result processing.

CBSE Introduces On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 Board Exams 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major change in the evaluation system of board examinations. From the 2026 Class XII Board Exams, CBSE will implement On-Screen Marking (OSM) for checking answer sheets. This means Class 12 answer books will no longer be checked physically in large evaluation centres. Instead, answer sheets will be scanned and teachers will evaluate them digitally on computers through a secure online platform.

CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 examinations every year across India and in nearly 26 countries, covering about 46 lakh students. To improve transparency and efficiency, the Board decided to shift to digital evaluation for Class 12. However, Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be checked in physical mode in 2026.

What is On-Screen Marking (OSM)?

Under the new system, students will still write exams on paper as usual. After the examination, answer books will be scanned into high-quality digital images. Teachers will log into a secure CBSE portal and evaluate those scanned copies on their computer or laptop. Marks will be entered online and the system will automatically calculate totals.

Because everything happens digitally, physical answer sheets will not be transported between cities and evaluation centres. This reduces manual handling and human errors and allows teachers to check copies from their own schools.

Benefits of CBSE’s Digital Evaluation System

  • 1. Elimination of totalling mistakes in answer sheets
  • 2. Automated coordination with minimal manual intervention
  • 3. Faster evaluation and earlier declaration of results
  • 4. Teachers can evaluate papers while remaining in their schools
  • 5. Reduced transportation time and logistics cost
  • 6. No need for post-result mark verification requests
  • 7. Lower manpower requirement for checking and recounting
  • 8. Participation opportunity for all affiliated schools
  • 9. Involvement of teachers from CBSE schools across the world
  • 10. Environment-friendly paperless evaluation system

Overall, CBSE aims to make result processing quicker, more accurate, and transparent. The digital audit trail will also reduce disputes related to checking and re-evaluation.

School Infrastructure Requirements for OSM

CBSE has instructed all affiliated schools to prepare their infrastructure in advance to support digital evaluation. Schools must ensure the following facilities are ready:

Requirement Specification
Computer Lab Public Static IP as per CBSE affiliation rules
Computer/Laptop Windows 8 or higher, minimum 4 GB RAM, 1 GB free space in C drive
Browser Latest Chrome / Edge / Internet Explorer / Firefox
Software Adobe Reader installed
Internet Minimum 2 Mbps reliable connection
Power Supply Uninterrupted electricity with backup

Teacher Training and Preparation by CBSE

To ensure smooth implementation, CBSE will provide training and support to teachers and schools. Teachers registered on the OASIS (Online Affiliated Schools Information System) portal will be able to log in and practice the digital evaluation platform before actual checking begins.

  • 1. Practice login for all teachers with OASIS IDs
  • 2. Multiple try runs to simulate real evaluation
  • 3. Training programmes explaining the marking process
  • 4. Dedicated call centre for problem resolution
  • 5. Instructional videos and detailed guidelines

Separate activity-wise instructions will also be released by CBSE to guide schools and evaluators step-by-step.

For students, the examination pattern will remain unchanged — they will continue writing exams on paper. However, evaluation will become faster and more accurate. The chances of calculation errors, misplaced copies, or delayed checking will significantly reduce.

Students are advised to write clearly and neatly because answer sheets will be scanned. Good handwriting and proper spacing will help evaluators read responses clearly on screen.

CBSE’s On-Screen Marking system is part of a larger shift toward digital education administration in India. By reducing manual errors and improving transparency, the Board aims to build more trust in board exam results. It may also lead to earlier result announcements, helping students apply for colleges and entrance counselling without long waiting periods.
