Government Medical College, Jammu, established in 1973, is one of the leading medical institutions in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Located in the heart of Jammu, known as the Temple City, the college was initially founded to train 50 MBBS students per year. Over the years, the capacity has expanded, with 180 students now admitted annually. In addition to the MBBS program, the college offers postgraduate courses, making it a hub for advanced medical education. Starting in modest sheds with limited resources, GMC Jammu has grown into a comprehensive institution with modern facilities, well-equipped laboratories, and a robust faculty structure. The college council, led by the Principal and Dean and comprising Professors and Associate Professors, plays a crucial role in maintaining the institution's high standards, meeting at least six times a year to guide the college’s academic and operational direction.

About Hospital

GMC Jammu is affiliated with five main teaching hospitals: Medical College Hospital, CD Hospital, SMGS Hospital, Psychiatry Hospital, and Dental Hospital, all of which provide healthcare to patients across Jammu Province, parts of Kashmir, and nearby regions in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. From its initial setup with 900 beds, the bed capacity has expanded to 1,700, including the Medical College Hospital and the Sir Col. R.N. Chopra Nursing Home. These hospitals are supported by a strong workforce comprising 800 doctors, including faculty and residents, 1,000 paramedical staff, and 1,500 other employees. In addition to these facilities, the college has affiliated blocks in R.S. Pura, Kot-Bhalwal, and Dansal for practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Together, GMC Jammu and its associated hospitals continue to deliver comprehensive healthcare services, serving as a vital referral center for the entire region.
