Established in 1959, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar is one of the oldest and most respected medical institutions in North India and was the first of its kind in Jammu & Kashmir. Originally set up as a small dispensary near the Jhelum River, GMC has grown into a comprehensive educational institution, educating thousands of doctors and specialists who now serve across the globe. Formally inaugurated in 1961 by the then-Prime Minister of J&K, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, GMC began with a batch of 50 undergraduate students and has since expanded significantly. Now located at Karan Nagar, the college houses 22 specialized departments, a well-stocked library with over 18,000 books and 14,000 bound journals, and modern facilities for practical training. Known for its high educational standards, GMC has produced over 4,000 graduates and close to 1,000 postgraduates who have earned global recognition for their medical expertise.
