Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, stands as one of the premier and oldest medical institutions in the northeastern region of India. Its origins trace back to the vision of British philanthropist Sir John Berry White, who, in 1900, established the Berry White Medical School with a significant personal contribution of Rupees Fifty Thousand—a sum that would be worth over 50 million rupees today. This initiative marked the beginning of allopathic medical education in the region, granting Licentiate Medical Practitioner (LMP) diplomas to students. In 1938, the Assam Branch of Licentiate Medical Practitioners, under the leadership of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, decided to elevate the school into a full-fledged medical college. Consequently, Assam Medical College was officially established on November 3, 1947, in the former US Military hospital used during World War II at Borbari, Dibrugarh. The college was inaugurated by Assam's first Chief Minister, Late Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi, with the admission of its first batch of students, which comprised only six seats.
