The Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) in Port Blair was founded on September 1, 2015, marking a long-awaited milestone for the residents of these islands. Envisioned to serve the unique healthcare and educational needs of the region, ANIIMS became a reality with the support of a centrally sponsored scheme that facilitated its establishment by upgrading the G.B. Pant Hospital. Initially developed with a 100-seat MBBS program, the college focused on providing quality medical education to local students and a smaller share to the All India quota. With its affiliation to Pondicherry University and a dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching staff, ANIIMS quickly became an essential institution for advancing medical education in this remote area. Admission to the MBBS program is now determined by NEET scores, ensuring a merit-based system, and the college continues to evolve, meeting the academic and clinical needs of future doctors.

About Hospital

The ANIIMS Teaching Hospital, integrated with G.B. Pant Hospital, serves as the primary healthcare facility in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Starting as a district hospital, it has been expanded to meet the diverse healthcare demands of the islanders, offering 24 specialty services and five super-specialty services, including Cardiology, Nephrology, Pediatric Surgery, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The hospital supports not only Port Blair but also remote regions, such as the Nicobar Islands and Neil and Mayabunder Islands, by extending its specialized medical services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ANIIMS’s hospital staff and students, including the first batch of graduates, played a vital role in managing cases and providing healthcare support, showcasing the institute's commitment to public health in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
